Hospital Ships has grown considerably in sound and scope from their early days as a solo home-recorded project of Jordan Geiger. Geiger’s gentle tenor has always been delivered with an intimate sincerity and vulnerability that is typical for bedroom projects, but with this year’s Destruction In Yr Soul the band (now a four-piece) have added a solid foundation of ringing, anthemic guitars and propulsive drums. The full band elements have shifted the band’s main reference points from early Flaming Lips and Built To Spill, to something closer to their Lawrence, KS neighbors, The Appleseed Cast.

Their set at saki was one of the most impressive we’ve seen. The band was coming off a summer tour and clearly had fine tuned their full band arrangements. It’s always nice to hear a band with such a command of their album tracks, that they’re able to play them faithfully, yet still add a new energy and drive to them.

Destruction had been in heavy rotation in the store in the weeks leading up to this session, and while it could have easily been played out after their set, we found the opposite to be true - we played it even more! Now we’ve got this Epitonic saki Session to enjoy. It’s not to be missed!
